May 12, 2020 · Coastal erosion on the west coast of Sri Lanka has been a longterm problem, since the 1980s. The beach area between the Maha River mouth and had initially been eroded due to the reduction in the supply of river sand as a result of river sand mining and barrage construction over the river during 1980–2004.
The civil war ended in 2009, and Sri Lanka has been working hard to turn around its fortunes. The economy grew at an average rate of % between 2010 and 2017, transitioning to a manufacturing and servicesoriented economy. With that, poverty decreased .
